WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?

A chemical peel involves the application of chemical solutions directly into the affected skin to make it “blister” and peel off eventually. The procedure is carefully monitored as the desired depth of the wound depends upon the patient’s skin condition. Once the dead skin cells are peeled off, smoother and younger-looking skin surfaces, making chemical peels an ideal treatment for dull, aging skin.

WHAT DO CHEMICAL PEELS TREAT?

The procedure is done more popularly on the face, but it can also be done in other areas of the body such as the neck and hands. The treatment is performed to:

  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines commonly found around the mouth and under the eyes
  • Correct wrinkles that have appeared due to aging and excessive sun exposure
  • Improve the look of mild scars
  • Improve the appearance of freckles, age spots, and dark patches which could be caused by pregnancy
  • Enhance the overall appearance and feel of the skin

WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES FOR CHEMICAL PEELS?

Individuals who have light hair and fair complexion can benefit the most from a chemical peel. However, dark-skinned patients may also reap good results from the treatment depending on the condition of the skin. It is important to note though that there could be a risk for skin discoloration after the procedure. Meanwhile, sagging skin and wrinkles may not respond well to the treatment and may need other cosmetic surgical procedures.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING A CHEMICAL PEEL?

During your appointment, our skin care professional at Riverside Medical Arts will cleanse your skin thoroughly before starting the procedure. We always make sure that the procedure is done in a safe and effective manner.

Once the skin is cleansed, chemical solutions are then applied to small areas of the skin. These chemicals may include glycolic acid, salicylic acid, trichloroacetic acid, and phenol acid; and may be given either as a single solution or multiple solutions. The chemicals will create a controlled wound and allow new skin to surface. Most of our patients report a burning sensation, followed by a stinging feeling, during the procedure, yet this is temporary and only last 5 to 10 minutes.
